Well, the most obvious answer would be another unbreakable vow, but I'm not sure that I believe Rowling would use the same device twice. Dumbledor says that it was the biggest regret of Snape's life, but that tells us nothing about what he did to redeem himself. In order for Snape to have received the position he held at Hogwarts you can bet Dumbledor would have needed something significant as proof when he recanted. It will be interesting to see what it was, because I have no clue at the moment.

I read a discussion about this topic in another chat room. It is believed that Dumbledor trusts Snape because, Dumbledor is hiding Snape's mother. Remember Harry saw the child Snape cowering/crying while his father was yelling or beating his mother? Also, Prof Dumbledor, in the last book, told Malfoy that he could hide his parents and that it has been done before?

He did not say they had done it before. He just said that they could do it. We assumed the rest.

Hi everyone - good discussion here.

I just have to ask... would the Wizengamot simply take Dumbledore's word that Snape was trully remorseful?

I think that Dumbledore would believe Snape's story, and he wouldn't need an Unbreakable Vow to feel more assured.

I think there must be at least one other person, besides Dumbledore and Snape, who knows the specific details of why/how Snape definately changed his ways. Any court of law would require some proof, wouldn't they?
