I think James left the cloak with Dumbledore to use as he saw fit for the order of the pheonix. If he needed someone to be invisible to watch Voldemort or some of the Deatheaters. It may not have been for Dumbledore himself to use but for someone Dumbledore may have wanted to use it for those purposes.

I believe it is reveiled that James was an auror because Harry was working on his N.E.W.T.S and he had mentioned that they were not going well, and if he wanted to be an auror like his father, that he needed to get his grades up.

I am going through some of the books now to find the chapter and the exact quotes.
