a direct link to the idea having been used before is in lord of the rings.... Sauron poured his evil into the ring and so he couldn't be destroyed until the ring was destroyed...
but what i found even more depressing is that that idea originally dates back to Norse mythology, the guys the vikings called gods.....

had it been an original school of thought it would've been REALLY impressive....

but yeah, unfortunately WE can't turn back time.......

Well, all ideas originate from somewhere, even the greatest inventors did. True, if it were completely original it would have been cool, but I still think that it's cool that she kind of expanded and gave life to the idea.

I agree with Ginny. I mean how its not a crime to make things from other people's ideas. I think it was brilliant. She made it different from the rest though wich kind of DOES make it original...

Hey! you're right! And now that you mention it, neither did she invent the dragon, basilisk, goblin, warewolf, vampire, magic wand, ghost, poltergeist, flying on a broom... man, none of this stuff is truly original. Even the funny names are all real names.

Here's a list of things that are in her book that she didn't create completely originally:
1) Houses (the ones that the students are in, not the buildings)
2) Basilisk
3) Schools of wizarding or sorcery
4) Wands

And there was something else that I found out is actually from Greek Mythology, but I can't remeber it at the moment. Get the point?
