The Philosopher's Strone was published in 1997 (I think) in the UK; the Sorcerer's Stone was published a year later in the US.

As for Harry's age, most people figure Harry was born in 1980, because in book 2, Nearly Headless Nick's 500th deathday cake gave the year of his death, and Harry was 11 at the time, so you can use that to figure out when the books are taking place.
Is this making sense?
If you want more evidence, when Harry visits his parents' graves, the headstone says they died in 1981. And Harry was 1 year old they died.

So, then, the Epilogue took place in the future? 2016 if I'm doing my math right...

i think he is 17 and will be18

the epilogue is in 2010 or 2011 if my math is right because he was born in 1979 or 1980 and he's 11 in 1990 or 1991. Going on 18 when he defeats Voldermort in 1996 or 1997. Add 19 years later to that and that is 2010 or 2011. (this is all without the book at my figuretips because it is at home and I am in oceanside)
