Well, Lord of the Rings and Naria both seem to have held up pretty well, I thought, and though HP may be more era-specific, I see no reason it shouldn't last- although to how broad a group remains to be seen.

(I have to admit, on the other hand, that I've never heard of the Famous Five. )

I think Narnia was floating away and then the movie revived it (I find them quite a bland read to be honest). LOTR has clearly withstood the literary test of time. I just wonder if HP, without all the fan hype, will do the same. What I'm trying to say is that LOTR has been analyzed and acclaimed by literary critics. HP achievements seems to be more fan based versus literary. (Don't panic! I'm not saying they're not good!)
I simply restate that time will tell...

Well, not to antagonize anyone in particular, but as far as literary quality I have to say Lord of the Rings most definitely surpasses Harry Potter. So you could be right about that- and although Narnia wasn't quite as good or attention catching, I think it remains a great fantasy series for younger kids.
Still, we can only hope that future generations will have some idea of what we mean when we say "Pottermania". I think one of Harry Potter's strong points is that it can entice so many fans, despite, possibly, that it isn't really the most well written. (But it certainly is one of the best. It's just, you know, not a Kite Runner.)

Yes. I am no great fan of LOTR and yet I do recognize its literary quality. And HP, alas is not that well-written. But it is very appealing and, is one of those rare books which is read and loved by an extremely wide age range. I don't know many, for e.g., who have read LOTR outloud to six year olds.

Time will judge whether HP will last as well as LOTR.

great observation.
Similarly - the Lord of the Rings trilogy - it's written in a different time and place. guaranteed longevity really.

i think it'll be impossible for Jk to stop writing hp, i'ts like jogging every day since you were two and suddenly stopping when you turn thirty. you'r muscles get tense and you can't move becasue you ahven't done your usual routine, jk's brain is gonna tense until it sees what it recognizes again. that's my opinio,

i dont think she will write for a while though or she will write butshe wont feel obligated like she fealt now i think right now she will focus on raising her kids but anyways a longer wait is better because when the book or books come if they do then we will want them more than if they came out quickly
