| Someone new was having trouble with an avatar and posted their request in all capital letters. After explaining which threads to read, I asked for them to make sure they use full words, upper and lower case letters, and post in complete sentences. Someone asked why. This is the explanation. Language is a means of communication. In its simplest form, language is a transmission of ideas, pleasures, dislikes, and even love. Done well, language may be an expression of your deepest thoughts. Done wrong, and you will be misunderstood, or worse, you might be labeled as ignorant, ignored as a malcontent, or pushed aside as a loser. There are many types of languages: verbal, written, and body language. This board uses the written form of English. We could choose to add German, French, Russian, Japanese, or Chinese. We could allow leetspeak, or any other written forms of expression. However, we chose English for now. Because we are all in different locations across this planet, we do not have the ability to see the person's body language, nor can we hear their voice. We must rely on the written form. Therefore, choose your words carefully. Language is a learned skill that needs to be explored, edited, and even censored. Language shows your maturity. Therefore, learn to use new vocabulary that expands your mind. Learn to substitute words of heavy, vulgar objection with words that provide a lighter tone. Learn to stay away from emotive language and learn to paint a scene of serenity and happiness. Write your posts and edit them so they reflect your purpose. Take the time to develop exactly what you want to say. Instead of saying, “That suxs” express your ideas by explaining why you came to conclude displeasure. There is no rush. This board is not a race. It is a place to enjoy, laugh, learn, and have fun. It is a place of imagination and therefore you should use your mind and imagine great possibilities. Most important, learn to censor your own writing. Do not call someone a crazy person, even in jest. They may not think it is funny. As a matter of practice, write with the other person's voice in mind. Think about their reaction. Assume how that person is reading your post. They do not know you. Therefore, you need to appreciate that a sixty year old, businesswoman might read "How r u?" and decide the poster is a child with little or no interest in expressing anything important. Language is an art form. As your language skills develop, there will be a greater capacity to write vivid expressions of love and hatred. You will be able to paint with your keyboard. Use this art form well, and you will be able to enjoy life to its fullest. Finally, let me leave you with this thought. You would not find JKR using U in place of you in her books, right? NOTICE: What is the grade level of this post? You are correct if you guessed seventh grade. |

| OMG!!!!!!!!!!! Bt I dont thik that tat is rit! Its disrlkation! Me'll sue U!!!! Ok, just kidding. It's good to see somebody who can type in proper english, every once in a while. Writing well also adds alot to how much your opinion is respected. It's hard to respect the writer of a post who looks like they might have passed the third grade... with a D-. "Take the time to develop exactly what you want to say. Instead of saying, “That suxs” express your ideas"- Right. "U Sux" will impress no one. It is better to say: "That horrible remark makes me want to desecrate my keyboard with last week's luncheon, yet I shall refrain, long enough to impart the strong implication, that you, luck342563246 are an unmitigated idiot." |
