Why do people think of Hufflepuff as the 'also ran's? Why do people think that Hufflepuffs is the house where anyone who doesn't fit into the other houses, ends up??
Helga Hufflepuff was an equal in power and importance to any of the others. Hufflepuff is equal - at least! - to the other houses. Indeed, our 'grounded', well balanced approach to magic and the ethics of the magical society, makes us superior in every respect as far as I can see
