Than again, we were never introduced to any.. ahem.. normal slytherin exept Snape.
Especially in the first few books, the slytherins we got to know were mostly: super mean or increadobly stupid*.
I remember that after reading the first book, kids would think of it this way:
Gryffindor - you're smart, loyal, brave, nice and friendly
Hufflepuff** - you're little less smart, loyal, brave, nice and friendly (usually on Gryffindor's side)
Revenclaw** - you're smart, loyal, brave, nice and friendly.. a bit (usually on Slytherin's side)
Slytherin - you're complete opposite of Gryffindor
*usually both
