I think, starting with foreshadowing even in the first book, that JKR probably had that backstory already planned out... so that very well could have been delibrate. I'll admit that was done very well. |
Like Teddy said, I assumed it was James. But now since I've read these post I remember when Snape was watching Lily and Petunia playing at the playground. Then he steped up and started talking to them(or Lily) about her magic and his ect...... Petunia didn't like Snape at all so "that boy" had to be snape. Good eye Hedwig!
