This summer, about 1,500 students are getting better acquainted with Harry Potter, Junie B. Jones, Nancy Drew and other characters in literature.
It's all thanks to the Accelerated Reading Program, which rewards students in prekindergarten through 12th grade for summertime reading.
Sponsored by the St. Bernard Parish School Board, the program is open to all students, according to Joan Griffin, who is coordinating the program with Carla Carollo. Both are teachers in the St. Bernard Parish public school system.
In the program, students read books then take a short computer test to assess their comprehension. The students receive points based on the difficulty of the book. A preschooler's book may be worth a half point, Griffin said, while the latest Harry Potter tome is worth 44 points.
