It can be a noun, but in this case it was an adjective.
Children will call each other "baby," often with a sing-song voice.
It doesn't need to make any sense. It's just intended to be insulting.

Yes, punctuation is helpful. Having actual thoughts to start and finish with punctuation is also helpful.
