Maybe........ as noted in the HBP snape was an accomplished potion maker and studied well in lessons with slughorn... So however was Lily James. They would have been in the same class together.

Is it not a possibility that snape liked lily and when she chose his arch enemy James Potter it explains snapes massively increased hatred of him. Maybe Dumbledore knew of snapes feelings for lily and therefore knew he would never allow her to be killed , so Dumbledore believed that he was genuinely sorry when Voldemort used the prophecy to attack lily and her family!!!!!!!!!!!!!............as Snape knew nothingof the Dark Lords plan when he recieved the info.......
This I think is the secret between S & D and the basis of his long lasting trust in him!!!!
