I think it would be a true travesty for the English - who speak English, to be told they are not allowed to use their version of English when writing a book that is set in England.

If "American english' were truly to be the world superior language - then don't call it 'ENGLISH". Call it AMERICAN. so that we can all be aware which version you prefer.

I - am Australian - and in our schools they teach ENGLISH and US ENGLISH. We are atleast aware of the difference. the 'language of commerce and trade' is not just American English. Go to Europe - they teach English (UK) there.

I would never have the audacity to ask the author of any book to rewrite it using words from my country so that I could understand it better.

I am so surprised to read the comments in this thread. I understand that most folk here are from the US, but to expect every book ever written to be in US english is rude. Shall we re-write Shakespeare too?

Good for you GB. I am a United States of American and I am perfectly capable of dealing with bogey and trainer and jumper and sorcerer's stone. As I have said in a previous thread, I am insulted that the British publishers even considered changing the books for the U.S. market.

Much of the delight in reading is entering a new story with its own language. Many of my most beloved children's books were from the British Isles. I was perfectly capable of dealing with Peter, Winnie and Alice in their own environments.

I guess that I had better quit ranting, but I could go on all day.
