I though JK actually handled the third-wheel problem well, where they were still the Trio when it mattered, and it was at the point when Harry actually needed to do certain things by himself that Ron and Hermione really got together-together. But they still support him, and they are still best friends, and Harry has Ginny anyway, who fits in her own way. After Lav-Lav, and the Oppungo!Birds, and Dumbledore's funeral I don't think anything short of JK killing one of them off would have stopped Ron and Hemrione getting together eventually. Unfortunately.
