In my other life today I did make this mistake. I have been corresponding with someone with an exotic name and I assume it was a woman. When I spoke with her for the first time a man answered and I assumed he was her father. Of course I just got it wrong, but I was surprised how much it threw me. And I didn't feel comfortable telling him I had thought he was a woman.
