I complained once about the director -- but that was misplaced. you are right, it is the writer. I heard Dan on Leno praise the director and realized right away that it was the writer who'd left out all the stuff I'd hoped to see!
Now it does seem the producer could have asked for some rewrites. I'm not exactly sure how that all works. BUT the writer is responsible to someone.
