That's all common knowledge. Snape, at least, knows all of that.

And what does the chapter title mean, anyway?
What bribe? |
good questions that you ask. I've been thinking about my ideas for a little while now.
I'm not sure 'bribe' is the right word. But, isn't a bribe something you give to someone to get them to do something they may not necessarily want to do.
It is clear Lupin didn't want to be married to Tonks, (for whatever noble reason). He was (I think) dragged into it. Any relationship, where one party has to be dragged into it... or convinced to take part... it can't be easy.
The climate for werewolves wouldn't have been good. The animosity and rejection of people associating with Werewolves also would have made it difficult. I suppose like the Jews in Nazi Germany. It would be hard to have someone you care for be subjected to 'discrimination' that you - and you alone - are responsible for.
I perhaps thought 'bribe' related to the gift they gave to Kreacher, but that isn't even in that chapter.
I agree, - Lupin did not seem like himself at all. But, I don't think he has been himself for a long time. There wasn't much evidence of Book3 Lupin in books 6 & 7 (or so it seemed to me).
