I like to think of Hagrid as more than just an answering machine..which I am sad to think he is being used as currently.

He's a thinking bot..with so much more possibilities. He's full of, as he says so often, 'good gossip'. And Hogsmeade has been portrayed as a place for just that in the books. His awkward questions would fit in well there I think.
