Lupin announced
"...they've found Karkaroff's body... surprised he stayed alive for even a year... Sirius's brother, Regulus, only managed a few days as far as I can remember."
We don't know much about it, but the story seems to be common knowledge.
Lupin knows all about it, and doesn't seem to think it's a mystery.
