Futhermore if you read the book carefully it says that when sirius was hit it took him ages to fall, and if u remember in the prisoner of azkaban book and movie when the dementors caused Harry to fall of his broom dumledore did some magic which caused harry to fall slower and i believe he did the same thing in the case of sirius plus if JK really wanted to kill sirius she could have just had bella lestarnge hit him with the avada kedavra curse. i believe sirius is just hiding out so that Voldermort will not be able to use him against harry again.
